We’re not here to erase the past. We’re here to build what’s missing.

Downtown Converse, Texas (2017) Master Plan commissioned by the Converse EDC (CEDC) in conjunction with UTSA.

When you look around, ask yourself, does Converse feel like a destination city? For many of us, the answer is no. We drive to neighboring communities to enjoy a public event, walk around, shop, and relax. I want the same here in Converse and we can build on our traditions make this city not just where we live, but where we call home.

In 2017, the Converse Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) commissioned the video above to illustrate the city’s then Master Plan. It was full of resident-centered amenities and growth for a vibrant community. In short, it was a Destination Community for Everyone.

Instead of following this vision and plan, the city’s leadership (Mayor and Council) adopted it and had no plan to implement it. They wanted “reasonable” economic development leading to the current state of our infrastructure, maintenance, and community amenities. Instead of supporting growth and bringing in new businesses, and creating an entertainment district, they voted it down. Not once. Not twice. But three times.

Almost ten (10) years later, the CEDC is once more spearheading an effort to create a Master Plan and Vision with even more public input. Unfortunately, while the public envisions a future that matches their desires, our elected leaders have not planned for it. There are no funds to pay for it.

In short, it’s not likely to happen.

I’m not willing to give up on our future or settle for less than what we can achieve. Not only do we deserve a community filled with amenities and high quality of life, neighboring communities are building it for their citizens and taking away our opportunity.

I have a plan and that’s why I’ll push for the following:

  • Reinstate the Converse Beautification Commission and receive your input on what we can do to make our city more enjoyable
  • Build a truly walkable town center with green space, tree-lined streets, public art, and entertainment district
  • Invite youth sports leagues to not only use our parks, but make them their home fields and increase opportunities for Converse youth
  • And increased Sales Tax revenue to help pay for it

I will also publish a Strategic Alignment Scorecard so you can always see what we are working on and where we are making progress.

You’ve also seen the cracked roads, drainage problems, and reactive maintenance. We are unable to keep up regular maintenance, even with our low pace of growth. It can’t continue and that’s why the council is raising your property taxes.

We need the following:

  • Dedicated funds for road maintenance without limiting our ability to recruit new employers
  • A full neighborhood-level infrastructure audit — transparent, and tied to real timelines
  • Master Plan and Vision that is not just talk or “reasonable”, but gives us a home to enjoy at any age and can be achieved!
